The Global Problem

Green House gas emissions cause global warming, damaging the environment at an unprecedented rate and scale.

  • Legacy Air Conditioning (AC) refrigerants are Green House Gases that have Global Warming Potential (GWP) that are 1,000s times more damaging to the environment than carbon dioxide (CO2).

  • Refrigerant leakage alone accounts for 10% of total global greenhouse gas emissions.

  • AC will account for 40% of global carbon budget by 2050 (US-EPA).

  • Governments are mandating the elimination of high GWP refrigerants through international treaties and national legislation.

Industry Challenge

  • The good news. Next generation Hydrofluoroolefin (HFO) synthetic refrigerants such as Solstice® ze (R-1234ze) are available with ZERO GWP.

  • The bad news. Legacy AC compressors and systems do not perform well utilizing the new ZERO GWP refrigerants.

  • Next generation Commercial AC systems will require new compressor and system technologies for economic operation with ZERO GWP refrigerants.

  • New compressors must operate with lower density refrigerants, increased volumetric flow rates and lower pressure ratios all while having increased efficiency and low cost.
