The Global Problem
Green House gas emissions cause global warming, damaging the environment at an unprecedented rate and scale.
Legacy Air Conditioning (AC) refrigerants are Green House Gases that have Global Warming Potential (GWP) that are 1,000s times more damaging to the environment than carbon dioxide (CO2).
Refrigerant leakage alone accounts for 10% of total global greenhouse gas emissions.
AC will account for 40% of global carbon budget by 2050 (US-EPA).
Governments are mandating the elimination of high GWP refrigerants through international treaties and national legislation.
Industry Challenge
The good news. Next generation Hydrofluoroolefin (HFO) synthetic refrigerants such as Solstice® ze (R-1234ze) are available with ZERO GWP.
The bad news. Legacy AC compressors and systems do not perform well utilizing the new ZERO GWP refrigerants.
Next generation Commercial AC systems will require new compressor and system technologies for economic operation with ZERO GWP refrigerants.
New compressors must operate with lower density refrigerants, increased volumetric flow rates and lower pressure ratios all while having increased efficiency and low cost.
